Don Plowman

Youth Hunt

The Duck Callers Association of Nebraska strives to be one of the best when it comes to conservation education. In 1998 DCAN Board Members Tom Curran and Doug Noller proposed developing a Special Youth Hunt as a way of involving more youth with the sport of waterfowling.  They developed a program that would involve mentors, workshops and a special Youth Day waterfowl hunt.  The time the youth spend with the mentors will hopefully instill in the youth a strong hunter ethic and idea of sportsmanship that will last them a lifetime.

The Nebraska Game & Parks Commission allows DCAN to fall under its Insurance umbrella due to the fact that the mentors are also certified by the state as Hunter Safety Instructors. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service has also been involved in granting DCAN special waivers to allow the use of motorized boats on areas where motors are not allowed.

In 2001, following the untimely death of longtime DCAN supporter Don Plowman, the Board of Directors voted to name the annual Youth Hunt in Mr. Plowman’s honor. Don’s wife continues to support the Youth Hunt in her late husband’s name with a contribution to help offset expenses involved with the hunt.

The following are the criteria should you or someone you know be interested:

·          The youth must be between the ages of 12 & 15

·          The youth must have successfully completed and be certified through the Nebraska Hunter Safety program

·          Youth must attend a workshop put on by DCAN prior to the actual hunt

The workshop will be an opportunity for both the youth and their parent(s) to meet the mentors and observe the program. At this workshop the youth will be shown what to expect the day of the actual hunt. They will be given seminars on calling, decoy placement and gun safety.  If possible there will be an opportunity to shoot a round of trap.

On the day of the hunt the youth will be paired with a DCAN Mentor and parents will NOT be allowed to accompany the youth.
